by Morgan Zeliff '06Have you ever heard of Seattle's Lighthouse for the Blind? Chances are that you have not as it has been known as "Seattle’s Best-Kept Secret." Junius Rochester '57, recently published his book, Seattle&s Best-Kept Secret: A History of the Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. The book follows the fascinating history of the non-profit organization through its current activity. Formed around 1910 as a social club called the Seattle Association of the Blind, Seattle's Lighthouse for the Blind grew quickly to what it is today. Primarily, the Lighthouse addresses the challenges and barriers of blind/deaf citizens with basic education, training and employment. When they first began they funded their efforts through selling crafts and games made by their members. Today, they continue to sell products both online and at their store. Other Whitties involved in the project include Ray Haman '51, longtime board member of the Lighthouse and author of the book's forward, Kirk Adams '83, Director of Public Relations and Resource Development for the Lighthouse and coordinator of the project, and, connected in somewhat of a different capacity is Paul Pangakis '55, who is designer of the Lighthouse building. To learn more about the organization, visit their website:http://www.seattlelighthouse.org A link to the book can be found at: http://www.seattlelighthouse.org/book/index.html |
