The Wallowa Mountains:  A Natural History Guide by Keith Pohs, '94

Whitman College Featured Alumni Author

Keith Pohs is a '94 geology major and author of The Wallowa Mountains: A Natural History Guide, published by Northwest MountainWorks of Portland, Oregon in August of 2000. The book is the first such guide to the range in over 50 years. It is a comprehensive guidebook to the climate, geology, flora, and fauna of northeast Oregon's Wallowa Mountains and spectacular Eagle Cap Wilderness. The Wallowa Mountains: A Natural History Guide is available now at the Whitman College Bookstore.

Keith is currently working for the United States Geological Survey's Colorado Plateau Field Station in Flagstaff, Arizona as a research specialist focusing on regional vegetation ecology. As for writing, he has begun initial work on a second title, a natural history of the San Francisco Peaks, a group of 12,000 foot mountains just north of Flagstaff.

The Whitman Builders Team
Whitman alumni volunteered for the Habitat for Humanity "Blitz Build", September 20, 2003. Led by Professor Bob Withycombe, a great time was had by all and for a GREAT cause!


The "Blitz Build" set out to build eight houses in nine days with an additional six houses to be built before Christmas 2003.

Superset Tennis
On Saturday, November 22 from noon to 5pm, members of the Whitman tennis team and coaches will be on hand for Superset Tennis in Portland, OR, at The Rose Quarter. Tickets are $25 through the Whitman College Alumni office and are available by calling 1.800.835.9448 ext. 1. You will get the chance to meet with current team members and see eight of the top players in the world compete for a $250,000 purse.

Before that, Whitman College will hold its own Superset event on campus. This event is open to all ages, gender, and abilities. Winners will be invited to play Friday, November 21, at the Vancouver Tennis Center in Vancouver, WA. Cash prizes are available to the overall winner. Tournament will be held Saturday, November 8, beginning at 9am. Entrance fee is $5 and questions should be forwarded to coach@whitman.edu.
