WOW takes a look at Linda "Jay" Jackson, '71.In an awards ceremony on the lawn of the residence of the US Ambassador in Kathmandu, Nepal, Linda “Jay” Jackson of Anchorage, Alaska, was recently awarded the Ambassador’s Award for Community Service. In the 50+ years the US Mission has been in Nepal, this is the first time the award has been given. Ms. Jackson was recognized for her many and varied humanitarian activities in Nepal. Jay first came to Nepal in March 1999 when a former Bartlett High School student took her on his own humanitarian mission to Nepal. He had told her 20 years previously that he would become a doctor, donate his time in developing countries, and take her with him as his documentary photographer. For three-weeks the team visited five eye hospitals throughout Nepal. Jay’s homework assignment was to return to the US and raise awareness. She produced six multi-image productions and has given over 60 programs on Nepal on the local, state, and national levels. In 2001 she founded Helping Hand for Nepal, Inc. (HHN), a registered 501.c.3 nonprofit. An all-volunteer organization, 100% of all donations—cash and in-kind—go directly to the Nepal project. As first recipient of the Ambassador’s Award for Community Service, Jay was recognized for providing over $7mm in humanitarian assistance to Nepal in the last five years. Recently HHN has made possible seven life-saving heart surgeries for indigent patients at the Gangalal National Heart Center, including one for a 15year old orphan boy from Rukum—a Maoist stronghold. The lad has returned to his village healthy and with a chance at life. HHN also helps sponsor ten children at the SOS Tibetan Children’s Village/Pokhara, and gives a scholarship to a Dalit boy (untouchable caste) to attend the Institute of Forestry in Pokhara. Last winter HHN provided new wool blankets to the Taplejung District Hospital in the mountains after Jay learned the hospital had no blankets of any kind for the patients. HHN supplies books to village schools, medical texts/journals to teaching hospitals, and has a surgical items recycling project in conjunction with Alaska Regional Hospital. Through Jay/ HHN the Anchorage Soroptimists recently helped fund a new Girl Child Scholarship program to be administered by the Rotary Club of Baitadi—a district in the far west of Nepal, also Maoist-infested, extremely poor, and where the drop-out rate for girls is beyond the already high national average. Jay is quick to acknowledge all of HHN’s supporters, both individuals and organizations, without whom none of this assistance would be possible.Being a first recipient is not new to Jay. In 2002 she was the first recipient of the Sister Cities International Dick Oakland Award for service to SCI and Humanity. She was one of ten women honored nationally in 2003 by Soroptimists International with their Women Helping Women Award. She is a former Fulbright Award recipient in Communications and Journalism, and in 1996 was an American Teacher Award Honoree—named one of the top three technical educators in the US. Jay was honored by the Prime Minister of Nepal in 2001 for her humanitarian work, especially in the area of avoidable blindness. For information on how you can help Nepal, email Jay at helpnepal@info.com.np.
