Whitman College Faculty Members Lee Thompson and David Glenn are Retiring
In May of this year Lee Thompson and David Glenn will end their teaching careers at Whitman College. To honor their careers we are asking you to send us photos, newspaper clipping, card, or any stories you would like to share about them. You are invited to attend this annual event celebrating and sampling the delicacies from the State of Washington for those living in Washington DC. We have reserved two tables of 10 for Whitman College Alumni. Bob Withycombe, professor of rhetoric and film studies and his wife Nancy, along with Kieta Mall ’89, will be our Whitman table hosts. This is Whitman’s tenth year participating in this event.

The Science of Terroir: Can You Really Taste a Place? Faculty Lecture, vineyard tour and tasting with Whitman College Professor of Geology Kevin Pogue in Sonoma, CA
June 25, 2011 • 11 a.m.-1 p.m. • Sebastiani Winery
Join Whitman College for an event at the Sebastiani Winery in downtown Sonoma.
President George Bridges will greet the group and give a brief update of the college.
Professor of Geology Kevin Pogue will talk about the concept of terroir and what science has to say about the ability of the physical attributes of a vineyard - elevation, slope, aspect, soils, climate - to affect of the sensory components - color, taste, smell, texture - of its wines.

Alumna Meda Chesney-Lind ’69 selected as Commencement speaker, degree recipient
President George Bridges has announced the 2011 Commencement speaker: Meda Chesney-Lind ’69, who graduated from Whitman summa cum laude. She also will receive an honorary doctorate at the Commencement ceremony, Sunday, May 22.

Cecilia Kang ’94 delivers 2011 Hosokawa Lecture; journalism contest winners announced
She has covered stories around the world, from Seoul to Silicon Valley and subjects just as diverse, but Washington Post writer Cecilia Kang ’94 returned to familiar settings on campus March 31 to deliver the 2011 Hosokawa Lecture and join in the presentation of the Hosokawa Journalism Contest awards. Kang writes about communications, media, high-tech and Internet policy and publishes a Washington Post blog titled “Post Tech.” Read more.
Men’s tennis overcome Bearcats, earn fifth straight ticket to NCAA DIII Nationals
Overcoming a determined Willamette effort in singles, the Whitman College men’s tennis team continued its Northwest Conference domination with a 5-0 victory over the Bearcats in Sunday’s finals of the conference playoffs. Read more.
