You are invited step back in time for a look at the 1960s as we examine that eventful decade during Summer College 2005, on the Whitman College campus. With the post World War II baby boomers coming of age and the end of European colonization, the world experienced a great deal of social and political change. This year's program takes a look at some of the history, politics and science of that decade and their lasting impact.

May 1, 2005 marks the 29th running of the Spokane area Lilac Bloomsday Festival Run. This year, as for the past fourteen years, Robert 'Bob' Crabb, '72, will have a VERY good view of the start. Crabb, a vice-principal in the Spokane School District, will fire the starting pistol for the fifteenth year in a row. He explains his involvement with the event as follows:

"I ran in the first Bloomsday and in a number of them after that. I worked with the starting line director and volunteered to help at the start. The benefit of that was that as one of the 'rope holders' I could drop the rope when the race began and run from the front rather than in the middle or back (which was where I ended up anyway!) 15 or 16 years ago he handed me the gun at our pre-race meeting and told me I was the starter. I've had the gun at the start ever since.

It is an exciting job. I have the Riverside Street start which is the 'elite start.' The world-class invited runners start there. We actually have five starts on Riverside: three wheelchair starts, the elite women, and finally the elite men.
Whitties of the World
Bloomsday itself has three starting lines on three different streets. That is in order to accommodate the 45,000 to 60,000 runners we have each year. It is a wonderful, colorful event, and the largest race in the world that gives every finisher a time. I am proud to be a part of it. Shooting the gun that starts the race is a real rush." Bob Crabb, '72
