March 2011
Dear Alumni,

As I write this note, seven Whitman scholars are finalists for 2011-12 Fulbright awards. Of the seven, two are alumnae. Another alumnus is already a recipient for an early-start Fulbright program in Brazil.

Moral of the story: The relationship between Whitman students and the Office of Fellowships and Grants doesn’t end at graduation. In many cases, it expands in concert with your academic plans and professional goals.

Our office assists Whitman alumni and undergraduates alike in their candidacy for national fellowships, scholarships and grants. Each year our scholars receive generous awards for graduate study, self-directed research, teaching and public service in the States and abroad. As gratifying as these outcomes are, a more important measure of meaning in our work is the self-reflection our candidates exercise and the awareness they gain in the application process.

I encourage you to visit our Web site to survey post-baccalaureate opportunities. Fulbright, Marshall, Mitchell, Rhodes, Luce and Gates-Cambridge awards are but six of several possibilities.

The grants world in 2011 is not for the faint of focus. Competition has never been keener. It is crucial that you declare your intentions early and work with our office well ahead of deadlines. Now is not a moment too soon for the awards season ahead.

Best regards,
Keith Raether, Director, Office of Fellowships and Grants

Whitman in the News

Mobile Web provides quick access to key Whitman pages, alumni events
The college has launched a “beta” version of a mobile Web site. The tool provides quick, user-friendly access to select links for internal and external Whitman College web site visitors. The purpose of the mobile site is to make key content easily viewable on mobile devices. Find the mobile site at m.whitman.edu.
NOTE: While you can view it on your computer at this address, the layout is designed for mobile devices and will look more appropriate on them than on your computer screen. The mobile site, which launched with a link to alumni events, eventually will expand from the initial version.

Whitman professors Helen Kim and Noah Leavitt are what they are researching:
an Asian-Jewish married couple. They are exploring how such couples navigate their various identities, and recently The Chronicle of Higher Education interviewed them.

Alumnus honored for accomplishments in artificial intelligence field
Getting a machine to automatically process knowledge and information — to essentially reason like a human brain — is, computationally, very difficult. But orchestrating this feat on a global Web scale can be a colossal undertaking that can take years of focused work. Perhaps no one knows the trials and joys of creating “artificial intelligence” better than Paea LePendu, Ph.D ’96.

Coming soon in your March Whitman Magazine:

Crossing Disciplines: Where do physics and music, art and environmental humanities, theater and politics, and sociology and mathematics intersect? This spring 40 faculty members from all three academic divisions are venturing into new territory to find out.

Stories and photos you won’t want to miss:
• The “white out” in Sherwood Athletic Center’s George Ball Court when the Whitman men’s basketball team upset the No. 1 NCAA Div. III team in the nation.
• 24 hours in Penrose Library — it isn’t just about studying.
• Alumni news: an architect of green art museums, two entrepreneurs and bicycles built for city commuting, an Alumnus of Merit makes the world safer and a poetic view of Lakum Duckum’s ducks.

Why We Love Whitman

Parting Shot by Greg Lehman, Whitman photographer

A packed house at Sherwood Center last Tuesday night was at its loudest when Brandon Shaw ’12 hit one of two free throws with 33 seconds left to put Whitman ahead of Whitworth, the No. 1-ranked NCAA Division III team in the country. Whitman won 82-79.
