On
May 18, 2004, Jason Tanguay, '98, joined that elite group of men and women
who have conquered the highest peak on earth- Mt. Everest. This was the
second time Tanguay had attempted to summit Everest (29,028 feet). The first
time, May 2001, his climb to the top was cut short by 535 vertical feet
when his group came across two climbers in distress. Anyone who has climbed
at high elevation will tell you that once you begin a high mountain rescue,
the rest of your trip is over. Jason and his group led the exhausted climbers
down the mountain to safety. For their selfless efforts the group was awarded
the American Alpines Club's David A. Sowles Memorial Award.
But on this trip there were no delays and no detours as Jason's team made
The Summit around 1:30 p.m. A quick look around, a few photographs and private
rejoicing, and they began the descent back down the mountain. To read all about the planning and execution of this trip visit http://www.vashonsd.wednet.edu/everest/. Congratulations, Jason! |
