Dear Alumni and Parents,
On February 16, we will celebrate Whitman College Founder’s Day on campus and at a special gathering in Portland, Oregon.
In the 1950s, Founder’s Day meetings were held all over the country; alumni
gathered to reconnect with each other and commemorate the founding of their
alma mater. In the 1980s, a formal speech by a college administrator marked
the day. However, for some reason, the tradition of celebrating Founder’s
Day fizzled.
Today, the Documenting the Past Committee of the Alumni Association Board of
Directors, is reviving this important tradition with the goal to educate
students and remind alumni about Whitman’s rich history. The committee has
encouraged articles about the College’s history in the Whitman Magazine and
history talks during reunion weekends.
It has also hosted special events on February 16. Why that date? The Rev.
Cushing Eells, Whitman’s founder, was born on February 16, 1810, and died on
that same day 83 years later.
This year on February 16, students will be greeted in the Reid Campus Center
with none other than Cushing Eells (aka Rogers Miles, senior adjunct
assistant professor of religion, who portrays the Rev. Cushing Eells at
community events). A “birthday cake” will be served, and photographs from
Whitman’s early days will be displayed. Alumni office staff will be on hand to
talk to students about Whitman’s history.
In Portland, President George Bridges will give a Founder’s Day address to
alumni, parents and friends (see details below). If you do not live in the
Portland area or if you are unable to join us, we encourage you to raise a
glass to toast Whitman’s founder, the Rev. Cushing Eells.
Documenting Whitman’s past is a crucial part of remembering Whitman’s past.
You can do your part by submitting materials that shed light on student
life, including diaries, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks,
course-related materials, records of student organizations and activities,
and memoirs. If you have such items, please contact the college archivist,
Michael Paulus, at paulusmj@whitman.edu or 509-526-4731.
