Ryan Crocker ’71 “un-retires” to become ambassador to Afghanistan
Though alumnus Ryan Crocker ’71 retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2009, it was a short-lived retirement. He has been called to service again as an ambassador to meet the challenge that is the U.S. relationship with Afghanistan.

Music alumnus Lee Mills ’09 receives prestigious conducting fellowship
To the delight of his former music professors, including Lee Thompson and Susan Pickett, Lee Mills ’09 has been awarded the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) Peabody Conducting Fellowship. He is the third recipient in the history of the fellowship, which begins in September. Read more.

It’s summer, but learning continues. In one of the chemistry labs on Friday afternoon, Haya Jamali ’12 and Julia Warren ’12, right, work with proteasome inhibitors, which, as everyone knows, are drugs that block the action of proteasomes, cellular complexes that break down proteins, like the p53 protein. Proteasome inhibitors are being studied in the treatment of cancer.
