Whitman in the News |
![]() feature by Katie Innes, '06 As the 2004-2005 ski season winds down, WOW focuses this month on Ingrid Backstrom, '00. A Seattle native, Backstrom is an internationally-ranked freeskier who recently won Best Female Performance and Breakthrough Performance for her film-debut in the ski-film Yearbook. 2004 was her first year skiing for a film company. After Whitman, where she was a three-time All-American racer, Backstrom entered her first big mountain competition in 2001. By 2002 she was second in the International Free Skiing Association's world rankings. She has maintained this position despite never having finished the three-event Freeskiing World Tour. In 2004, she won the Canadian Freeskiing Championships and came in third at the U.S. Freeskiing Nationals. In 11 of 12 career freeskiing events Backstrom has finished on the podium. "I think attitude is everything," says Ingrid, 26. "If you go into the contests like, 'this is awesome, this is fun, I'm just skiing with my friends and challenging myself,' then it doesn't matter how you finish, and I think you end up skiing a lot better."
