Letter from President Thomas Cronin

Dear Members of the Class of 1980:

I write to invite you to come back to Whitman for the Class of 1980’s Twentieth Class Reunion, which will take place on the campus on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 22-24, 2000.

This will be a fine time to see old friends, visit with some of your former professors, and to meet new staff and faculty at Whitman. We also have a few new buildings and have overhauled and renovated several others since you were a student here.

I’d like to meet you if I haven’t already had this opportunity. I plan to lead a "Presidential Tour" of today’s Whitman campus, at which time I will make observations about our future plans.

Whitman College has done exceptionally well in the 1990s. Alumni generosity and favorable equity markets have helped us enormously. We continue, however, to remain devoted to the long-standing central mission of the College -- which is to educate liberal arts students who are headed for leadership positions in the professions.

Our reunion weekends offer a variety of activities, including lectures, campus tours, informal social gatherings, tennis and golf outings, and the chance to visit favorite haunts and walks in Walla Walla. By the way, Walla Walla is changing too. There are some better restaurants, 18 wine makers in the Walla Walla Valley, a new airport under construction, more art galleries, and much more.

We expect over 2000 applicants for next fall’s entering class, and we are delighted by the quality of students who currently apply here. I want to encourage you to call us or e-mail us with names of prospective students who you believe should be on our mailing lists. Admissions dean John Bogley can be reached at 509-527-5882 or at bogleyja@whitman.edu.

I hope very much you join us at the Class of 1980 Twentieth Reunion on September 22-24, 2000.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Cronin
President, Whitman College
