A Tradition of Excellence

On the national scene, Whitman’s Parliamentary and Policy debate teams continue traditions of excellence that have become a hallmark of the college. Whitman’s name is synonymous with debate success, from collegiate team competition to hosting tournaments and high school camps.

Programs

Policy

Intercollegiate competition between two teams of two debaters. One side advocates a resolution for change in government policy and the other negates that advocacy. The resolution remains the same all year. Emphasis is placed on advocacy and evidence.

Parliamentary

Intercollegiate competition between two teams of two debaters. One side advocates a resolution for change in government policy; the other negates that advocacy. The resolution changes for each round. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive research and rapid adaptation to opposing arguments.

Public

Whitman students plan, organize and participate in public debates, including projects with the Washington State Penitentiary as well as debates with colleges and universities throughout the region.
