Outdoor Clubs and Teams
The climbing club supports all types of climbing. The climbing club is composed of dedicated individuals who love to unite under the banner of climbing and mountaineering, build community and go have a good time somewhere. The club helps student climbers with the resources and skills needed to explore mountains of all sizes, from boulders to volcanic peaks and everything in between. Another important facet of the climbing community is that we love adventures and go cool places. Every mid-fall break we take a trip as a crew to one of the world class areas in the Pacific North West (Leavenworth, City of Rocks, Smith Rocks, or Squamish) and every Spring break we head to somewhere warm to crush in the sun (usually Red Rocks). These trips exemplify what the climbing club is about. As individuals we are dedicated and passionate about climbing, spending from sun-up to sun-down on the rock. Yet, we are also a community spending nights listening to one another’s stories of successes and challenges, sitting around campfires, and generally enjoying the company of the climbing community.

The climbing team is one of the recognized club sports teams at Whitman College. It receives funding from the clubs sports budget. It is student run and organized with staff oversight. The Whitman college climbing team participates in the NC3 (Northwest Collegiate Climbing Circuit). There are generally eight NC3 sanctioned climbing competitions in the spring semester and team members compete on both an individual level and towards a team score. The NC3 is a collegiate bouldering competition circuit. While many members of the climbing team have competitions in mind other people active in the team use it as a community for their own personal training. Some team members travel and compete in other circuits individually.
The backcountry club strives to provide resources that enable students to get out skiing and snowboarding in the backcountry. We offer the avalanche one course every year and the avalanche two course every other year at a reduced price to ensure that students who are part of the club are learning how to make safe decisions regarding where to ride in the backcountry. Money spent on gas to and from the mountain can be reimbursed if it's a club trip! Pick your own backcountry adventure and we help facilitate the fun...
