Teach and Learn in Korea (TaLK)


National deadline: Second week of December for the February term, and second week of June for the August term.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be a citizen of one of the following countries where the national language is English:
  • Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom or USA.
  • Overseas Koreans with permanent residency in the above countries are also eligible.
  • Korean Nationals with temporary residency (with the intention of obtaining permanent residency) who
  • have lived in one of the above countries for at least 8 years including elementary school are also eligible.
  • At the time of application, all applicants (standard and exchange students) must be enrolled in a Bachelor's program and have completed at least two(2) years of undergraduate study OR have obtained an Associate's degree in one of the aforementioned countries.
  • Recent college graduates and graduates are eligible to apply
  • Overseas Koreans in their 1st or 2nd year of undergraduate study are eligible if they qualify for the F4 visa or hold Korean citizenship.
  • Must have a strong command of spoken and written English and sharp communication skills.
  • Must be adaptable to a new environment.
  • Must be responsible for his/her own physical and mental health, and judgment of his/her capability in performing the assigned duties/responsibilities.

Award summary: TaLK is a Korean Government scholarship program known as Teach and Learn in Korea. The program's main objective is to invite and train native English teachers and overseas Koreans to teach practical English in after-school classes at the rural elementary school.

Participants of the program, known as TaLK scholars, are given the opportunity for personal and professional enrichment through the duties & responsibilities set forth by the Korean Government. As English instructors, TaLK scholars will create original lesson plans for varying grade levels (i.e., first through sixth), and teach in the classroom with a Korean university student. As explorers fulfilling the "learning" part of the program's mission, TaLK scholars are encouraged to travel around Korea to learn about the history, culture, language and people.

TaLK scholars receive an array of benefits which include, but are not limited to: a round-trip, economy class air ticket, accommodation, traveler's health insurance, monthly stipend of KRW 1.5 million, a one-time settlement allowance and cultural trips arranged by the provincial offices of education.

The program, which began in April 2008 under the direction of South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, is designed to support public English education in the rural areas of Korea, where the opportunity to meet a native English speaker is rare and educational resources are limited.

Under the guidance of the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) and the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), the TaLK Program has awarded government scholarships to over 1,800 participants within the past three years.

National committee interview: 
Interviews will be conducted at the designated Korean Embassy/Consulate in your home country only after you have successfully submitted your application (Parts A and B) online.  The embassy or consulate will contact you and arrange an interview date.  Additional interviews can be conducted by the Seoul TaLK Office.

Selection process: What are interviewers looking for in the selection of TaLK scholars? Interviewers are looking for native English speakers, and will base their evaluations on the applicant's overall attitude, reason for applying, interests in Korea, thoughts on service and teaching, to name a few examples.  Preference will be given to candidates who:  have a degree in education, English or subjects related to Korea; have excellent school records including a good command of English, and have completed primary and secondary education in the countries where English is the national language.

Announcement date:  You will be notified of the results via e-mail approximately three weeks after all requirements have been completed.  You will be able to check you offer of acceptance through the TaLK website.

English Program in Korea (EPIK)


National deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning March 15, 2015 for the fall 2015 term. Interviews will begin the first week of April.


  • Be a citizen of a country where English is the primary language.
  • Hold a minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Be a maximum of 62 years of age.
  • Be mentally and physically healthy.
  • Have a good command of the English language.
  • Have the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean culture and lifestyle.

Award summary and conditions: EPIK, affiliated to the Korean Ministry of Education was established in 1995 with the mission to improve the English speaking abilities of students and teachers in Korea, to develop cultural exchanges, and to reform English teaching methodologies in Korea.   • To assist Korean teachers with their English classes and/or jointly conduct English classes.
  • To conduct English conversation classes for Korean students and teachers.
  • To prepare teaching materials for English language education.
  • To assist in developing teaching materials for English language education.
  • To assist with activities related to English language education and other extracurricular activities.
  • To demonstrate a good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • To perform other duties as specified by the host POE (Provincial Office of Education).

Benefits of the program include free, furnished housing, modest salary, medical insurance and possibility of returning for a second year of teaching. 

Application:  Initially, all applications will be sent electronically. If you pass the initial screening and interview, you will be asked for the hard copies of all documentation.  When submitting your application, you must include the following in your email:

  • The application form(s)
  • Two scanned letters of recommendation*

*Please follow the guidelines for the letters of recommendation that can be found on the website. Incomplete applications will NOT be accepted. Also, please do NOT mail hard copies of the application to their office until you are requested to do so.  Only digital applications are accepted for the initial application stage.  Resumes will not be considered.

After a successful interview, two copies of the completed application must be submitted in hard copy.  In addition the following documents need to be sent:

  • Copy of passport information page
  • Passport sized photo
  • Apostilled CRC
  • Apostilled diploma
  • Sealed transcripts
  • Two original recommendation letters
  • Proof of level 2 pay grade
  • Additional documents (optional)
