Academic Biography


Laura Ferguson is Visiting Assistant Professor in the field of nineteenth-century US History.  While at Whitman, she will teach the introductory survey of US History (History 105-106), a course on “People, Nature, and Technology,” as well as topical courses on gender and the US West.  She received her PhD from the University of Michigan in 2012 with a dissertation titled “Gateway City: The Makings and Meanings of San Francisco’s‘Golden Gate,’ 1846-1906.” During the 2012-13 year she was a post-doctoral fellow at the U of M’s Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.
