Jonathan S. Walters (Ph.D., 1992, University of Chicago), Associate Professor and Chair of the Religion Department.
Teaching areas: Regular offerings on Buddhism (Rel 250 and 251), Religions of India (Rel 221 and 222) and Islam (Rel 207). Other courses include Introduction to Asian Studies (AsnS 160), the Buddha (Rel 347) and team-taught seminar for Religion Minors (Rel 390).
Research interests: all periods and facets of Buddhist and South Asian religious history, with specialized focus on the religious history of Sri Lanka. Works in progress include a book on the legend and cult of Arahant Mahinda, "apostle of Buddhism" to Sri Lanka, and a long-term ethnographic study of traditional Sri Lankan healing practices.
