HHMI Student Summer Research: Fred Hutchinson Interns for Summer 2012

With funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to support our interdisciplinary life science curriculum, Whitman College has entered into a partnership with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in Seattle.  Since 2009 students have been supported to work on projects ranging from the molecular evolution of HIV pathogenesis, to the immune response in bone marrow transplant recipients, to cell cycle regulation in tumor cells.  In 2012, two more students will be funded by Whitman/HHMI to work in a laboratory at the FHCRC for 9 weeks as members of the Summer Intern Program in Basic Sciences, Human Biology, Public Health, or Clinical Research. The stipend for the program is $4,500. The intern program runs from Monday June 11 through Saturday August 11 and students must be able to commit to the entire program. For more information about summer interns at Fred Hutchinson, see  http://www.fhcrc.org/science/education/undergraduates/

The HHMI Steering Committee at Whitman College is soliciting applications from students who will be entering their final year at Whitman College in fall of 2012 (Dec 2012 or May 2013 grads).

Application materials are available at

HHMI FHCRC 2012 Application Form

HHMI FHCRC 2012 Evaluator Form

A complete application includes:

A.  From the APPLICANT, the electronic submission (preferably as a single pdf file)

1) The application form (student name, email address, phone number, major, expected date of graduation, and evaluator information)

2) A 1-2 page statement of research interests and career goals.

3) A transcript/list of courses/grades including all college coursework you will have completed by Summer 2012.  Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

B.  From the EVALUATORS, the electronic submission of

Two letters of support from Whitman faculty members who have served as course instructors, advisors, or research mentors in the sciences.  A letter from a previous summer research mentor at another institution can replace one Whitman letter.  One Whitman faculty evaluator must agree to serve as the student’s on-campus mentor after the summer project.

All application materials must be submitted to Jim Russo, HHMI Program Director, by 4:00 pm on Friday, January 6, 2012.  A selection committee of science faculty will evaluate the applications and two students will be selected and notified in January.  The selected students will then be required to complete the FHCRC Application for Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (available at https://is-ext.fhcrc.org/open/surp/application.php) and we will forward your application to the FHCRC Program directors for placement in a laboratory.
